I was just wondering how many Concertinas will actually be played on this coming Burns Night? We all, I'm sure, know Simon's version of 'My Love is Like a Red Red Rose' from his YouTube: My Love is Like a Red Red RoseSo tell us, will you be playing your own Concertina on Burns Night? If so, which Burns tunes do you really enjoy playing? Cheers Dick

Oh goodness, now you're asking!
I've had 3 weeks off concertina playing over Christmas, outnumbered as I was by two electric guitar players who are both bigger and louder than me.
I must get my brain in gear. Oh, and start the search for tinned haggis........ imagine, i live in the gastronomic centre of the universe, and I can get MacDonalds and donner kebabs and pizzas on every street corner, but haggis is rarer than gold dust.

Ah Ha! .... it's times like that, you really need to keep your fingers crossed for a black out/power failure! Then you can just sit, smugly playing your Concertina, by Candle light! ;D As for Haggis, it's pretty easy to get over here now, ever since the Ulster Scots movement exploded! Cheers Dick

Last Saturday I drove 100km to St Rémy de Provence to get haggis, so it's all set for a Burns Supper chez moi Saturday night. I've just come across this map in the Scotsman, and I think I'll add mine to it. And the other one I'm going to next Wednesday night. And the one I'm not going to, if it's not already there. www.burnssupper2009.com/get-involved/burns-global-map.aspxIsn't it exciting!

Interesting idea alright. Thanks for posting this. I've just posted the details of our night. We're actually having one in Bushmills, so you can be sure we'll be drinking ..... Lemonade! ;D I'm not sure why that Burns Global Map only shows the Scottish sites, plus one in London. It's the good old Haggis, Neaps & Tatties that really makes the night for me, so fingers crossed! Anyway, I hope you have a great night. Cheers Dick

I'm not sure why that Burns Global Map only shows the Scottish sites, plus one in London. You have to click on the country you want to see, from the list above the map. Doesn't explain the London one, but hey ho!

This year, I'll be playing in an informal pub Burns session - that should be fun, no pressure.
And the following weekend, I'll be playing a Burns supper on both wooden flute and concertina (but not at the same time). I hope that will be fun, but I am feeling the pressure.
So I've been swotting up on Burns tunes, and having a lovely time of it.
I hope you all enjoy your Burns events.

Last night I was panicking at the thought of catering for 18 people. Then 3 called off with the flu, and another 2 are stuck over Toulouse way in the nightmare weather - trees down, motorways closed to HGVs, at least three airports closed. So anyone who would like to drop by to help eat all that extra food............ and do bring your concertina.

Unfortunately, I was away for the weekend and spent the evening in Stroud, Gloucestershire. I found the pub where I had an evening meal had "Auld Lang Syne" beer from The Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh, so at least I was able to drink a toast to the bard.

Sorry, no Concertina, I only played my Fiddle at the Burns Supper last night, with Mrs Ptarmigan on Harp. However, as Burns was a Fiddler himself, it was appropriate enough. The evening went well & the food was wonderful. Shame we can only get Haggis once a year over here. As with most Burns Suppers in Ireland though, they only served a small portion of Haggis .. as a starter! Having said that, half the folk didn't even eat the Haggis anyway, but had SOUP instead! Going to a Burns Supper & not eating Haggis is surely a bit like going to a Roman Orgy .... & reading a book! ;D So, did anyone here actually play their Concertina at a Burns Supper this year?
