I live in Dalkeith, near Edinburgh, although I grew up in Wick,Caithness. I starting playing concertina in the 1970s, being inspired by Tom Ward, a resident player at the recently opened Edinburgh Folk Club, and also by a guest appearance at the club of Alistair Anderson. My main music is Scottish traditional, especially Scottish pipe music. I play regularly at Fiddle & Accordion clubs in my area, because the music I play is shared by Scottish fiddle & accordion players. In the summer, I go to various festivals across Scotland, including Keith and Kirriemuir. I prefer festivals like these where I can meet up with friends and play in the pub. A few years ago, I got a copy of Phil Hopkinson's book "Dancing with my Baby" and since then I have also played concertina arrangements, with a liking of brass band type marches. I have also had in interest in concertina bands, and I have been regularly to the Hawkwood Concertina Band weekend. My main instrument is a Wheatstone Tenor-Treble, which had belonged to the owner's father in Helmsdale, but which had been sitting under a bed for 25 years before I bought it in 1995.

Hello David, Dalkeith eh, I was born at Hillend & when I was about 2, we moved to Penicuik until I was 9, then we moved to Edinburgh, 5 mins walk from Sandy Bells! ;D I was at Keith and Kirriemuir many times, also Kinross. I wonder, does Nigel Jelks still play Concertina at those festivals, or does he stick to Mandolin these days? I reckon the English Concertina & Scottish Pipe Tunes is a marriage made in heaven! A Wheatstone Tenor-Treble eh ..... you clearly have great taste in Concertinas! Or might I say, great minds think alike! ;D Cheers Dick
