Paul Groff here from Miami FL. I am thinking about trading a historically interesting concertina I have had for 25 years and thought I should mention it to you. Would consider trading for a good button accordion or melodeon (key negotiatiable, trade up or down). This concertina is barely playable but is not and won't be a great player. It is a Scates ca 1850 with nickel-silver reeds, more of a museum piece -- but is interesting as possibly the earliest english concertina documented to come to Ireland. Doubtless other englishes came to Ireland earlier with Regondi, etc, but I do not think the documentation is there that they arrived earlier. More on my instrument:
(see footnote 18 to the Scates timeline, in the document "Joseph Scates review").
This concertina is hand-signed internally by Scates and while not as fancy as some of his instruments, has beautiful hand-fretted brazilian rosewood ends, ivory buttons, handmade riveted action, early-type square-end hand-filed reedframes. If you or someone you know might like to trade a good box (melodeon or button accordion) for this Scates, let me know & I can take some pics. Best, Paul Groff
