This year's Kirriemuir Festival is on the weekend of 4th to 6th September. The festival is the continuation of the traditional music festival started in Blairgowrie in the 1960s, moved to Kinross in the 1970s, and settled in Kirriemuir in the 1980s. There is a mixture of concerts, competitions and sessions. Unfortunately, the Airlie Arms Hotel suffered a fire last winter, and doesn't appear to be open yet. That's a pity, because the room off the downstairs bar was a favourite place for sessions. (One year, there were 4 English concertinas - all Wheatstones ) Still, there are some other places including Three Bellies Brae - no it's not that fat - the pub's address is 3, Bellies Brae ;D at the top of the brae - and the Kerymor Tavern, known as the Hole in the Wa, and the nearest to the camp site. The session on Saturday morning in George Rennie's shop is legendary ;D and you'll find me there, as well as wherever takes the place of the Airlie. One of the competitions at Kirriemuir is for concertina. This competition started at Kinross, but has had hardly any entrants in recent years. Rules - For more info see Kirrie Festival Website

Hi David, I enjoyed many Kinross Festivals & even won the Jews Harp Competition one year, judged by Aly Bain, who seemed just a little bit over-qualified for the job really! I have been to a couple of Kirrie Festivals but unfortunately that weekend's out for me this year as we're playing for a Wedding one day & on another, we hope to be on a film set. Pity about the Hotel fire. So that's both Kirrie & Girvan's main session venues affected this year! Have a great weekend & say Hello to Nigel Jelks from me. I assume he was one of the Wheatstone players that year? Cheers Dick

Hi David, Pity about the Hotel fire. So that's both Kirrie & Girvan's main session venues affected this year! Cheers Dick I met Joe Aitken at Muchty Festival and asked him about the Airlie. It's now reopened, but the festival programme had to be arranged assuming that the hotel would not be open in time. So the Airlie sessions will be on again , although the normal festival events usually held in the function room will be held elsewhere.

The dates for 2010 are 3-5 September.
It should be another excellent weekend, as usual.

I made into the Dundee Courier yesterday, at least the Angus edition. The photographer came into George Rennie's shop on Saturday morning and invited the musicians there to come out into the street.
