A festival I enjoy each year is Newcastleton, which this year is held over the weekend of 3rd-5th July. Being so close to the Scottish Border, there are musicians from both sides of the Border, and a mix of traditions, and you're bound to meet a number of concertina players from both sides of the Border. The festival is mainly a do-it-yourself festival, with the emphasis on sessions. It started off as a day of competitions, and the sessions grew around that. The competitions include traditional singing, fiddle, accordion and pipes, Scottish, Border and Northumbrian. At one time there was a concertina competition, but it's now a Miscellaneous Instrument competition. The website at Newcastleton Festival doesn't appear to be up to date, but they might update it nearer the time. When visiting Newcastleton, don't miss the Copshaw Common Riding, an ancient tradition which has evolved over recent years. NB The local name for the village is Copshawholm, and there's an old song called Copshawholm Fair.

I must confess, even although I'm an Edinburgh man, I only ever got down to this festival once! The problem was that it clashed with Miltown Malbay, in Co Clare. Lovely part of the country though.

The 2012 festival will be held over the weekend of 29th June to 1st July. This should be another great weekend, with music day & night. Last year, the weather was so warm, the river proved to be an attraction. ;D
