Hiya -
I grew up in the US and spent most of my youth folk dancing to traditional music in the local community centre. The only opportunity to make music, however, was classical and so I played the silver flute and then the oboe... and then had a bit of a musical desert for over 30 years.
I've been in the UK for 33 years, but moved to Scotland nearly a decade ago. I was playing piano then, but really wanted to play with other people... so took up the wooden flute and have really enjoyed the session scene here.
For a few years, I've been looking for a second instrument that I would really enjoy playing, and after a few wrong turns, came upon the English Concertina. I've been playing for under a year, but really enjoy it! The EC is such a quirky small beast, but so expressive. Now I just have to really learn how to play it...
Regards, Pamela

Great to have you with us Pamela.
I look forward to you posting some MP3s & YouTubes of your playing.
Hopefully you can enlighten us too, on the music scene in & around Edinburgh & how Concertinas fit into it. For example, it'd be really handy to know which sessions, in your experience, were Concertina friendly, over there?
Anyway, I hope you enjoy your time on the forum.
Also, if you have any ideas on how I might improve it, please let me know.
Cheers Dick

As I rarely play anywhere where there isn't at least one other concertina player... I'd say that all sessions are concertina friendly!
But I am becoming aware that some people think the concertina is too loud... although a friend keeps suggesting that actually, I should play louder <lol>

That's great to hear! Maybe I've been playing the Hammered Dulcimer too long ..... cause you can be taking your life in your hands, walking into a session with one of those under your arm! Perhaps we just listen to the begrudgers far too much! After all, surely there's a place for almost every instrument in a session, isn't there. Now every player ...... that's a completely different question altogether! Cheers Dick
